“No much than all my writings”: context and preview of Vasyl Stefanyk’s autobiography of 1926

The prerequisites for Vasyl Stefanyk’s writing of his first autobiographical work are outlined. The details of the publication of fragments of the writer’s autobiography, commented on by the literary scholar Ivan Lyzanivskyi, in the journal Pluzhanyn—the printed organ of the Union of Peasant Writers Pluh—are revealed. The atmosphere of the Ukrainian Soviet literary process of the 1920s is characterized. Through the prism of the writer’s autobiographical text, the controversial nature of the role played in this process by the work and personality of Vasyl Stefanyk is highlighted.
