The article deals with one episode in the career of Kyrylo Studynskyi as the head of the Shevchenko Scientific Society. It is about the controversy provoked by the publication “Publisher, book and reader” in the Przemysl magazine “Ukrainian Voice” with accusations of the Shewchenko Scientific Society administration in the lack of commercial thinking and outdated work methods. In response, K. Studynskyi published a lengthy article “Shevchenko Scientific Society. In the name of truth”, where he presented his vision of the ways of NTSh activity in modern conditions. This controversy is a vivid illustration of the atmosphere that prevailed in the National Technical School in the interwar period, of ideological and organizational searches, guidelines, and values.
This is also an illustration of those social, worldview processes that were underway in the scientific environment of that time. These processes were aimed at the development of Ukrainian science, were adjusted to the requirements of the time, and they can be called constructive. History interrupted these processes, not allowing them to fully crystallize and putting this development on a long pause. Some of the issues raised by Ukrainian scientists of the interwar period sound surprisingly relevant even now: for example, the commercial aspect of scientific book publishing, the attitude of Ukrainian society towards its scientists and writers.
