“Ukrainian publishing house” in Krakow-Lviv (1939–1944): Status, Organization, Censorship, Themes

For the first time, the subject of this special study was a powerful publishing center in terms of the volume of published literature, which operated in the German-occupied Polish territories during World War II – the Ukrainian publishing house in Krakow-Lviv.
The purpose of this article is to study the prerequisites for the establishment, circumstances of activity and thematic repertoire of the publishing house as an enterprise for the production of book and newspaper products for representatives of a stateless nation under the specific conditions of a foreign country: legal status, conditions of existence, relations with authorities, structural features, management rules.
This publishing house has a number of peculiarities in other species-typological features: form of ownership, formation of the subject matter of the editorial portfolio, as well as circulation, distribution and fee policy.
It was alien to its own people, inconvenient, and even undesirable to strangers. But in both cases and under all circumstances, it remained steadfast in its lofty, holy goal: to be devoted to the genetic origins of its people, worthy of the mission and rank of the Ukrainian printed word abroad as a talisman of the nation.
The novelty of the work lies in the fact that the analysis is based on documents and materials published abroad, mainly in the USA, which were banned until recently. For the first time, texts from rare newspaper and almanac binders, which are not in Ukrainian book collections and which the author used during his scientific internship in Poland, have been introduced into scientific circulation.
This includes the weekly “Chelmska Zemlia”, texts by the then Archbishop of Chelm and Podlasie Hilarion (Ohienko), and others.
The article makes important clarifications regarding the mistakes made in the newspaper “Krakowski Visty” regarding the official name of the publishing house and the identity of its director.
For the first time, based on factual data, the features of the censorship policy of the occupation authorities regarding the content of Ukrainian-language publications, the salaries of full-time employees, and the features of the publishing house’s fee policy are examined in detail.
