For the first time a transformation of the image of Mykola Shugay from negative (bandit, murderer) to positive (people’s hero, legend, the Carpathian type) perception and emergence of neologisms–«shugaystvo» and «shugayivtsi» — synonyms to the words «banditry» and «bandits» on the basis of the publications in the Transcarpathian and Galician press of 1920–1930s has been analyzed.
