Oleksii Markevych – Theorist and Practitioner of Collecting the Corpus of Sphragistic Monuments of Ukraine

The article examines the theoretical, methodological, and practical contributions of Oleksii Markevych in the field of sphragistics. This scholar sought to establish a comprehensive corpus of seals in Ukraine, an endeavour he pursued through significant publications and active engagement in professional sessions, conferences, and seminars within historical disciplines. O. Markevych organised systematic efforts to identify seals in the Lviv archive and developed a precise method for photographing these artefacts.
O. Markevych also created a model form for cataloguing seals, which included twenty categories. These categories encompassed features such as sphragistic group, locality, date, the material of the seal, colour, shape, size, state of preservation, placement of the seal on the document, decoding and translation of the text, description of the image, photograph of the seal, storage location of the document, nature of the document, relevant literature, notes, the surname of the employee, date of form completion, and photonegative number. Over the years, various scientific institutions in Ukraine have utilised this model for sphragistic descriptions.
In his publications O. Markevych highlighted the timing and reasons behind the emergence of village seals in Galicia, as well as the characteristics of documents bearing these seals and the typology of the images. During the 1960s, he compiled a card inventory of seals in the Lviv Central Archive. These materials remain unprocessed and unpublished, containing substantial source material for sphragistic research, particularly concerning the study of village seals in Galicia.
